GoG.com Allowing Refunds

The folks at GoG.com have adjusted their policy and instituted a new system that will allow players to get a full refund if they can’t fix their problem within 30 days and their system meets the required specs. Sounds like a good policy to have and hopefully that will mean more satisfied customers.

    GOG.com, the DRM-free source of the best of gaming, announced today that it is now offering a 100% money back guarantee on the functionality of all of its games for PC and Mac for users everywhere in the world. The rules are simple: any game purchased on the site can be returned within 30 days of purchase for full money back if GOG.com’s Support team can’t solve problems getting the game running and the user’s computer meets the requirements posted on the game’s page.     GOG.com’s new policy is actually a declaration of trust in both its games and its gamers. GOG.com trusts the games that it sells: they do their very best to only select high-quality games and, whenever possible, tests them extensively to make sure that they’re in top working order; now they’re backing up that trust with a promise that they’ll do whatever it takes to make the games work or else refund gamers back their money. There’s also some trust in their users involved, since the very nature of DRM-free gaming means that they can’t “de-activate” any games that the user reports as broken.

CD Projekt RED Opens a New Studio

The makers of The Witcher opened up a new studio in Cracow, Poland. This new studio will help with the development of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

    CD Projekt RED, creators of the critically-acclaimed RPGs The Witcher and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, announced today the opening of a new studio in Cracow, Poland. The new studio will bolster the development of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.

    “A new studio, new people and new energy – we’re growing and we’re extremely excited that we can tap into the potential that Cracow has to offer. We want to continue to make better and better RPGs and the new studio is another big step in that direction. Resident Evil 6 Soundtrack Now Available

It took a while, but the soundtrack for Resident Evil 6 is now available on Amazon and iTunes.

    Sumthing Else Music Works, through its licensing relationship with Capcom, today announced that the official soundtrack for Resident Evil® 6 is now available for digital download from Amazon.com, iTunes, Sumthing.com and other digital music sites. The Resident Evil® 6 Original Soundtrack features over two and a half hours of original music from Capcom’s latest entry in the ground-breaking survival horror video game series which has sold over 50 million units worldwide.

    The original music score for Resident Evil 6 was created by an experienced team of composers including Thomas Parisch and Laurent Ziliani, Daniel Lindholm, Sebastian Schwartz, as well as Capcom veterans Kota Suzuki (Resident Evil® 5, Devil May Cry® 4), Akihiko Narita (Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Lost Planet®: Extreme Condition) and Akiyuki Morimoto (Monster Hunter™ 3, Lost Planet® 2). The score was recorded with the Sydney Scoring Orchestra at Trackdown Studios in Australia. Music samples are available at Sumthing.com.

Star Control Rights Secured by Stardock

Looks like these days a lot of old games are making a bit of a comeback. Seems like next on the list is Star Control. The old games were great, and it will be cool to see what Stardock does with the series now.

    Stardock is pleased to announce that it has secured the rights to the classic PC franchise Star Control with the intent to develop a new Star Control game. Development on the new game will begin this year with a release date to be determined at a later time.

    “We expect the new Star Control to come in the form of a reboot, similar to what Firaxis did with the XCOM series last year,” said Brad Wardell, president and CEO of Stardock. “We are looking at Star Control II as a major source of inspiration.”

Nordic Games Picks Up Two Atari IPs

With Atari IPs on the sellers block, it looks like Nordic Games wanted to get in on the action. At the end of the day they walk away with Desperados and Silver. Let’s see what they do with them.

    Nordic Games announced today that it has signed and closed an asset purchase agreement with Atari SAS recently regarding two of Atari’s intellectual properties, Desperados and Silver.

    The acquisition itself is handled by Nordic Games Licensing AB, based in Karlstad, Sweden, whereas the day-to-day business (sales and distribution of said titles, evaluation of sequels & new content etc.) will be conducted by Nordic Games GmbH, based in Vienna, Austria.

GungHo Online and Grasshoper Manufacture Team Up

In a surprise move, Grasshopper Manufacture was picked up by GungHo Online the owners of Ragnarok Online and Game Arts. Perhaps no one really saw this coming and no one really knows what it will mean for Suda and his crew. We wish them the best and hope they’re able to live a long and happy life. At least we know that Killer is Dead is still coming, so it’s not all bad.

    GungHo Online Entertainment, Inc. (GOE) today announced it has acquired game development studio GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE INC., founded and led by legendary designer Goichi Suda (SUDA51). SUDA51 and his team join GOE and will continue to work as GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE, similar to the relationship GOE has with its other leading development studios including GRAVITY, Game Arts, and Acquire. Titles already in development at the studio before the acquisition will not be affected by the deal and will continue under their current publishing terms.

Petition to Ban Region Blocks Up on White House Petition Site

Maybe this won’t go anywhere, but I firmly believe that region locks really don’t help the consumer at all. As someone who lives abroad, it seems like so many things are blocked from me and as the world becomes global and shopping for goods crosses international borders, it just seems wrong to enforce these crazy region locks. Perhaps this helps businesses, but it sure isn’t helping me. I’m more than willing to give these companies my money, and yet they simply don’t want it.

So here is a petition on http://petitions.whitehouse.gov to get people who are against region locking to perhaps get the Obama Administration to take a look at the practice. If you’re interested in signing, please do so.

3DS Picking Up Steam in North America

NPD report was released today and it seems like the 3DS didn’t do too shabby. Maybe it’ll be able to ride a little momentum into the holiday season.

    Even with only five days of reported data, Nintendo 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 still had major impacts on the August video game market. The new hardware, which features 90 percent larger screens than the original Nintendo 3DS, and the new side-scrolling Mario adventure both launched on Aug. 19 and helped Nintendo achieve the following:

    Nintendo 3DS software sales increased by more than 68 percent over sales in July.

    Nintendo 3DS hardware sales increased by more than 36 percent over sales in July.

    The No. 1 and No. 2 top-selling software SKUs for the month are both exclusive to Nintendo 3DS. New Super Mario Bros. 2 sold more than 240,000 units to finish No. 1, and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D [Dream Drop Distance] from Square Enix sold more than 180,000 copies to finish No. 2.

    “Software sells hardware, and no one sells either quite like Mario,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “In addition to helping New Super Mario Bros. 2 get off to a great start, Nintendo 3DS XL is driving increased interest in titles such as Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7.
